Building process
A ship is delivered to our wharf as a huge jigsaw puzzel, consisting of thousands of parts varying from very small to large sections (skin plates). To achieve a clean building proces and a better weld quality only sandblasted steel plates are used. Our specialised welders assemble and weld the hull piece by piece in a separate hall. After completion the whole hull is grinded. The hull is then transported to the paintshop, where it is first sandblasted on the in- and outside and then thoroughly cleaned. Several parts of the ship are then galvanized for a durable corrosion resistance. The inside is then painted with primer twice, first with a brush, afterwards with a spray gun. The outside is first sprayed with primer, several layers of filler followes by several layers of finishing paint. All materials are from AWL-Grip for a durable protection and a fantastic end result; a smooth, shining yacht.Once the ship has been returned to the wharf it's parked in our assembly hall where specialists start with the assembly of piping, thermical and acoustical insulation, engines, wiring, central heating etc. Caracteristic of our yachts is the use of nothing but the best, certified components and materials, from engines to door fittings and wiring. On the basis of exact drawings our carpenters produce the wooden interior, with a sharp eye for detail and quality. A lot of effort is put in rounded shapes and solid wooden edges. Quality is partially invisible as many parts like heavy, insulating floor boards, and solid wooden frames can't be seen anymore after completion of the interior. Finally many layers of paint are sprayed on the wooden interior for the best end result. Cupboard doors and interior details are sprayed free of dust in any desired color in our modern spray cabin.A durable teakdeck with a thickness of no less than 15 mm is layed on all outside decks including swimming platform, which, in combination with a lot of stainless steel details, provides a luxorious look to the yacht. After completion of the yacht the ship is hoisted into the water and named by the owner and his relatives, often with a bottle of champagne. During the following trial the ship and all it's equipment are tested and adjusted where necessary. Subsequently the owner is invited for the delivery of his ship. We usually plan a full day of sailing, to be able to instruct the owner and let him get familiar with his yacht.

Wim van der Valk Yachts does not only built steel yachts, we are also very experienced with the lighter material Aluminum. If one desires to combine the design and sailing qualities of a steel yacht with a higher top speed, we can built an aluminum glider.
At the speed where a steel Continental, a so called displacement yacht, will reach it's maximum speed, an aluminum Continental will lift itself partially out of the water en proceed as a half-glider with a higher speed. The final top speed is depending on both specification (weight) and engine sizes.
The first new Continental 20.00 Aluminum is scheduled for delivery in the summer of 2007.
